Moving From Plan Into Action

A comprehensive and systematic plan is essential to guide your research project. Unexpected things happen regularly in classrooms. Although no amount of preparation can prevent surprises, having a solid action plan will give you the confidence to improvise. When things do not go as expected, novices might get the impression that they are not conducting their research correctly, but if you have made your plan with adequate care, you must follow through on it. If you need to alter your data collection for some reason, be sure that you do so in a systematic way. Data collection is the heart of the research process, so it has to be well organized.

Before you implement your classroom research plan, be sure to go over it one last time very carefully. Do you have all of the equipment and materials that you need for this project? Do you know how to operate it? It might be best to do a trial of your procedures in the classroom when it is empty a week or so before the actual event. Remember to enjoy your foray into classroom research. You will find it exhilarating (Werbner, 2004). While collecting data, try to observe the process and make notes of your thoughts about what takes place. Immediately afterward, an early first analysis of the data can give you ideas about ways to analyse the data further.

If your project requires gathering data from your students, you must explain your project to students and get their permission to use their work, images, or words. In some contexts, it will be necessary to first get your project approved by administrators. Be careful to use common sense and conduct your research project ethically.
